Culture

Thailand, the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized, can certainly be proud of its culture. Temple complexes around the country and the many attractions of the old capitals of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya as well as those of the present capital Bangkok are fascinating travellers from all over the world.

Since 1932 Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who rules the country since 1946 and is now the longest reigning monarch in the world, is highly respected by his subjects. Virtually in every house you will find a picture of the King, as he is deeply loved by his people.

Apart from its own language, Thailand also has its own alphabet. The pleasant appearence of the written word could be interpreted as an indication of the equally pleasant character of the Thai people.

Respect and courtesy towards the older generation is probably the most notable difference between the cultures of Europe and Thailand.
Here it is still regarded as an honour to help and care for the elderly.
